Umeda Sky Buliding

Last Saturday, I went to see Umeda Sky Building with my friends.
My friends are from Kyushu and Shikoku and not familiar with Osaka so I guided them Umeda.
First, we ate okonomiyaki in Yukari near Izumi no mae hiroba and loitered around underground shopping arcade in Umeda.

Then I heard one of them wanted to see Umeda Sky Building and went to see there.
When we reach there, Germany Christmas Market was held there.
We saw a beautiful Christmas tree and bought some German food at stands.
We couldn't go up to the Floating Garden Observatory because it was out of time but enjoyed fine illuminations.

Can I kick it?

Today I'd like to introduce a video, 'Can I kick it?'

Actually the title of this blog is quoted from this song.
The song is by A Tribe Called Quest, one of my favorite rap groups, and from their 1st album "People's Instinctive Travels."

Yakuza

I have to write an essay about yakuza in this class. But actually I don't like this topic so much because they are just scary. I feel scared every time researching the topic with their rugged and scar faces, showy suits, tattoos on the most parts of their bodies. So I found funny yakuza on You Tube. Check it.

They are yakuza in Osaka..., no, just comedians in Yoshimoto.

SAW 4

Have you seen the SAW series? This month, the movie SAW 4 was released. The series has been released on Halloween season since 2004 and it was the 4th series this year. The 1 was praised with its tensing and thrilling story in a film festival even though it cost less budget and the other series won top one of the week in the movie office box chart.

When I watched the first series on the DVD, I got pretty huge a shock with its story and I watched other 2 and 3. People say SAW is the best and others are not so good but if you see the 1, you must want to see the next, or will be made to want to.

I can't write about the detail of the story because it is a big secret. What's more, I can hardly predict how the story goes this time. These days I'm so busy with the university and my part time job that I don't have time to go see it. I feel like I couldn't see the old year out and the New Year in without seeing the movie.

A response to “Tired of getting stopped”

The author of “Tired of getting stopped” seems to be an African American and knows the meaning and the importance of the so-called gaijin cards well. He follows the Foreign Registry Law and always carries his card. He is just one of foreign residents living in Japan.

However, he feels discriminated against at a particular place in Nagoya by the same female police officer. He is always stopped for a police check by the female police in front of Takashimaya. He says that she has stopped him as many as thirteen times even though it was six months since he came to Japan.

There are no ideas about his looks, age or job but probably she has a kind of a stereotype or, worse, a racial prejudice against African American people. She seems to misunderstand that all African Americans are from ghetto, has been committing many crimes since they were young and can be criminals and he is also about to break into Takashimaya. In order to prevent the happening crime, therefore, she tries and stops him every time. This act may be caused by a responsibility as a police officer but it is also involved with her personal emotion.

A responce to "Not so welcome to Japan any longer"

Today I am going to respond to this article. In the article the author mentions a coming Act which obliges all foreigners to take fingerprints and pictures of their faces.

However, taking fingerprints is also considered as “a violation of basic human rights.’’ In Japan, taking and submitting fingerprints were one of obligations in the process of the Alien Registration. Through the 80th to 90th, however, the obligation was loosened because of some movements against it and eventually it was abolished in 2004. In other countries, this kind of policy is adopted but gathering criticism from foreigners and leftist organization as well.

Basically I agree with the Act. In my opinion, it is non sense to claim taking fingerprints to be “a violation of basic human rights.’’ People usually don’t care about their fingerprints every day. Today human rights are clamored strongly but the issue is just on today’s tendency.

A responce to “Which minority groups face the worst discrimination in Japan?”

After reading an article, “which minority groups face the worst discrimination in Japan?,” I thought about discrimination around me.

Since I live in Osaka, which has a Korean town, there were some Korean students living in Japan in my school. They usually made themselves known as Japanese names and some of them name their real real names. If they didn't say they were Koreans , they confessed their good friends that way but their friends didn't care about it and dealt with them as friends normally, though maybe they were surprised at first.

I know discrimination against African American people were rigid in the U.S., especially in the 1950s, and they fought their rights in the Civil Rights Movement. Today discrimination against them, such as the Jena Six, still prevails in some areas. I think, however, discrimination against them hardly happens in Japan.

Therefore, probably handicapped people suffer from discrimination worst of all ideas in the article, although unlike other cases of foreign people, they are Japanese. It depends on the degree of handicaps but handicaps tend to be seen with curiosity by ordinary people. Some People have handicaps mentally and others physically. Companies or employees tend not to require them. Even if they get a job fortunately, its salary is not as high as ordinary people's.

Until reading the article this time, I thought discrimination was just by people in one county against foreign people. I realized discrimination against domestic people can easily happen and be overlooked.

A response to "Don't judge marines too fast"

As Sandoval mentions in his response, probably it was careless of the female victim to get out of a bar with the four U.S. marines she met for the first time. Even if she was drunk then, she should not have acted hasty. It is not true that she never had a fault.

Although her careless is somewhat argued, the four marines who assaulted her also should be punished rigidly. What they had done to her is much worse than her fault. The rape is guilty. They should have know it was not fair to assult a strange Japanese woman, even though four men and woman. He seems to defend the four in that way, since he used to belog to or now belongs to the U.S. military.

Moreover, as Egan argues in his response, this case of the four has nothing to do with the withdrawal of the U.S. army from Japan. It is responsible for them as men, not as the U.S. marines. In the last paragraph, he no longer has an objective thoughts but just expose his self-conscious of the U.S. military. He seems to boast that the U.S. military has defended the world including Japan.

Why am I in IES?

This question seems quite simple but pretty hand for me to answer also. I don’t think I can answer the question with a few words. So let me explain of the reason why I entered this university, Kansai Gaidai, first of all.

My high school was a general course school and I couldn't take a special education of English there. But a female English teacher noticed my grade of English and offered me I go to an university of foreign studies. Since I hoped to study abroad in the future, after searching for universities in which I could major in English, I decided to go to Kansai Gaidai or Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. In the third grade, I studied hard for the entrance exam and what motivated me to study then was to study abroad in the university.

Now I am in IES in Kansai Gaidai. In a meeting held in the Tanimoto Memorial Hall, a professor said students who hoped to study abroad should choose the IES program and so I did that Then I somehow got high score in TOEFL and was chosen in IES. In the class, there were many students who had studied abroad. I was astonished their fluent English at first. But now, not only surprised at it, but also I am imspired by them and it determines me to study English.
The great reason of studying in IES still comes from the desirability to study abroad. I've dreamed of it since I was a junior high school. I also think that studying abroad must change my life. Therefore, IES is a necessary step for me to achieve my dream.

She better go to the Rehab

These days, I'm hooked on Amy Winehouse, a singer & a song writer in the U.K. Her 2nd album releaced in 2006 was given a great value and won the top in the music chart in the U.K. Recently the album was also releaced in th U.S. and she is one of hot artists now.

I watched the video "Rehab" for the first time this summer and since then I 've been a lot of fan of her. At first, I thought she was just a pop singer but was astonished to hear singing. She was a soul singer who reminds us of good and old soul music according to the title of her album. I expect she would be nomineeted in the Grammy Award next year with her single "Rehab" and her album "Back to black". What's more, she is said to be called blck-haired Aguilera, Ringo Shina in the U. K. and unprecidented like Eminem. I don't mean I also like her because I like Eminem but she is now as hot as compared with the three famous artists.

She is one of a few artists who act exactly what they sing. But, in case of her, it is a problem. She sings, "they tried make me go to the rehab. I said no no no," but she actually escaped from the rehabilitation to get through the addiction to drugs and this made her a big gossip. So every time I go to a CD shop, I wonder so much if I buy her album.

Incredible watermelon

One day in this summer I found a watermelon in a backyard of my house. When I saw the watermelon for the first time, I couldn't believe my eyes. This is the picture of the melon. First, let me say that I live in a city, Osaka, and there are never fields around my house. The backyard is a vacancy and it seems to be almost possible to grow crops. The size of the watermelon is not so big but as big as a handall. But I never know who grew it up nor when it was planted.

Last month, unfortunately enough, I saw the watermelon withered when I went through the backyard. I felt sad about that because I wanted to pick it up and try eating it if I could. But it is still mysterious why the watermelon grew up at such a place.

A response to "Japanese: A language in a state of flux"

I think Japanese is a leading beautiful language in the world. All characters of Japanese have roots on Chinese character. Kanji was brought in Japan in the 5th or 6th century from China and its shape was broken and changed into hiragana and katakana in the Heisei era. Unlike Chinese, Japanese has three kind of characters, kanji, an imposing character, hiragana, a delicate character and katakana, which usually stands for . That might be why I think that way about Japanese, while it is also one of the most difficult language to study.

This thought is, however, changing because of a great invention of plenty of loanwords. I have no doubt that the loanwords are indeed necessery in Japan now. It is almost impossible to translate things around us into completely suitable Japanese, such as マンション, ハンバーガー, ガソリン, ニュース, カード, ドーナツ, カレーライス, コーヒー etc... These days, however, abuse of the loan words are overstanding.

Taking a look at the nespaper of a day, I saw huge loanwords. Articles contained comprephensible words, such as ポスター as poster, テロ as terrorism, バランス as balance, オートバイ as motorcycle and アピール as appeal. On the other hand, there were complicated words which many people don't seem to understand, for example, トロイカ as troika, キャッシュフロー as cash flow, 住宅ローン as subprime lending. The loanwords seem stunning written in katakana but most people have trouble presuming the meanings of them or even can't understand them, especially elderly people.

Loanwords are important for Japanese to keep catching up with the internationalization but we also have to look goodness of Japanese over again.

My summer vacation

A long summer vacation July 19 to September 24 ended and finally the second semester had come. During the summer vacation, I did a lot of interesting things, going camping, doing a part time job, hanging out my junior high school students, visiting my grandparents, chilling out with my high school friends and more. I think I fully enjoyed the summer vacation. So, this time I'm going to write about a day with I hung out with my high school friends.

On August 27, I hung out with my high school friends for the first time since this spring vacation began. I saw some of them during the last semester but most were a long time for me. I had been excited to wait for it since the summer vacation started. They are my classmates in the third grade in high school and we planed to hang out before the summer vacation began. We often hung out with them, having supper, playing soccer and going shopping when were high school students and it was the first time for the first time since we became university students. We went to the Spa World this time with ten people this time. The names of the ten are Izumi, Shiozaki, Jun, Matsui-san, Yamasita, Yuji, Nagatsuka, Nabe-san, Murakami and me and eight people including me are university students. The other two are a polytechnic college students and a part time worker. By the way, one of them goes to an university in Tokyo and came back to Osaka during the summer vacation. This party was also dedicated to him. Anyway, we went to the Spa World but sine it was during the summer vacation, there were so many people in the pool and there are almost no spaces we to swim. We could hardly enjoy the pool. So we gave up the pool in only one hour and went to the Spa. It was August and the Spa for males were the Europe Zone. I think we could enjoy there better than the pool. By the way, f you have never been to the Spa World or are interested in it, you can just click here.

After The Spa World, we went to the Bamiyan in Kamishinjo near a house of one of us. I ordered gyoza as I did every time and we had Chinese dishes, talking about our high school days, our university life and so on. Moreover, we took some pictures of us. So I attached parts of them. The top picture of the three is Murakami and Izumi. Izumi and I were in the same class in the first and in the third grade. Probably, I hung out with him almost every week. And big-looking fingers in the picture is Nabe-san's. The picture in the middle is Yuji and Nabe-san. Nabe-san and I have been friends since we were in the second grade. I remember I used to go home part of the way with him. The picture below is me and Jun. I don't remember when I got shot the picture. But I guess I was getting the camera ready.

Besides that time, we went to karaoke, to eat yakiniku, to see the Tenjin Matsuri festival and more. I felt chilled to be with them and all I thought was high school friends were so cool.

Bamiyan

Last Saturday, I went to the Bamiyan, a Chinese restaurant, with two friends of mine I have known since we were in junior high school. The three often gather in the Bamiyan, eat meal and talk a lot about how each of us is doing these days. Since both of them had already had supper at home, I ordered some dishes and ate them by myself. Every time I go to the Bamiyan, I order the W gyoza. This time, of course I did. I'm addicted to gyoza. After my supper, we chatted and chatted. I could enjoy a different conversation from university friends with them because the three of us are Osaka people born and bred. We entered there at about ten thirty p.m. and left there at two a.m. Time went by so quickly but I had an exciting time with them.

Bu the way, the summer vacation is just around the corner. Fortunately, my summer vacation is starting from this Thursday. Do you have plans during the summer vacation? I have some plans in July and August. But I haven't had any plans in September. What would I do...? Anyway, have a good summer vacation!

My Dinner!!!

This is a picture of the supper in my family. The menu tonight is that a salad with some sliced pork, gyoza, shreded Japanese radish, rice, soup and some some pickles of cucumbers and eggplants. Guess who ate that many dishes? It was me. I ate 'em all by myself. In addition to them, I had another ball of the rice. I was so full up....
Actually they were all cooked by my mother besides gyoza. I just broiled gyoza because I was so hungry. It's so nice that I don't have to cook after I get home. Some in our class live alone and have to do their housework by themselves. I can hardly imagine I live in an apartment and do all things by myself. I might be late for classes every morning. I don't think I can cook every day. My room would be messed up all time.... So, recently I do thank my mom.

蟹江西 Part.2

Recently, another video, Stronger, from Kanye's third album Graduation, was published on Youtube.

I've been waiting for it published on Youtube since I saw him performing the song in Springroove '07.

I actually prefer the song to the other song I wrote about in the past blog.

He collaborated with Daft Punk and the song was made.
This can't be a poor work.

Anyway, check the video below if you want to.

Did you see sunglasses which he wore?

Who would the sunglasses fit on besides him? Nobody, I guess.

He is sexy and dope.....

But you might see some Japanese words in the video, too.

While watching the video, I tried to concentrate on watching it seriously many times but I couldn't.

My lip got loose. Couldn't help laughin'.

Katakana might feel cool to Americans but it's too funny to Japanese.

"ガソバレ!?" or "タツセイシロ!?"

Oh well....., I almost know what they mean but they are subtly wrong.

When he sings "I need you right now," the subtitle comes up "イマオマエガヒツヨウダ."

Please don't make me laugh to death, Kanye. For God's sake......

What's Up?

Last Sunday, I bought a v.a. album, What's Up? Hip Hop Greatest Hits V, in Tsutaya near my house.

I'd been wondering if I bought it but finally got it. I regret a little that I spent my salary of my part time job again. But it was a valuable purchase, I believe. Because the album contains songs of Jay-Z, NaS, Akon, Rihanna, Fergie, PCD, 50, Ne-Yo, Game, BEP, Snoop and more! They are so HOT, aren't they? Sorry, I was gone crazy. I gotta be cool.

In the album,by the way, I want to recommend you Ne-Yo / Because of You to you. You better check it!!

蟹江西!!!

Last month, it was announced that the release day of Graduation, the new album of Kanye West, is going to be carried earlier on the Website. At first, it was going to be dropped in September but carried on August 15. It is said that, in this album, Jon Brion joins as a co-producer ahead of the second album, and Chris Martin, the member of Cold Play, a rock band in the U.K., John Legend and Comnmon join as guests.

I'm of course gonna buy the album because I own both of “The College Dropout” and “Late Registration,” the two albums he has ever dropped. I'll run to the Tower Record on the release day. But I don't feel like I can wait until August. So I visited his Official Website. On the Website, you can see the jacket of the 1st single from the album. When I saw it for the first time, I thought, “man, what is this sleazy and strange character? Where is the pretty bear in the 1st and 2nd?” I laughed at 蟹江西 in kanji, too. But looking at the jacket more carefully, I realized that it was designed by Takashi Murakami, a Japanese modern artist. I got surprised again! Anyway you better click the screen and watch the video. You can see how def he is. He'll rock you for real. By the way, let me remark upon the song. The sound which he composes keeps on developing! And I mumbled unconsciously, “Oh, damn. Can't tell him nothin'!!

Baby Hatch

Today, I'd like to talk about "baby hatch" in Jikei hospital in Kumamoto. Recently, especially last month, I always saw the news about this isue on TV news and newspapers. Whenever the issue came up as an topic, the controversies were had whether “baby hatch” is should have been or not. However, the perfect answer didn't come out, still.

First of all, here is letter one by Krishna Haksar in Clearwater, Florida.

The author shows some of her experiences that she has worked with children and families for more than 20 years and works with developmentally disabled adult now. Through her experience, she emphasizes no matter how old the children are, they will get mental shock because of the abandoment by their parents. She argues that what is needed more is goverment's supports and a strong monitoring agency.
However, she says parents won't stop abandoning babies regardless of any systems and even though it is baby hatch, they will continue to do that. In addition she thinks the fact that a little boy who is three years old was found in baby hatch on the first day should be considered to be a warning.

Secondly, here is letter two by a person in Ashigara, Kanagawa.
The author gives a case of a couple of a junior high school student and her boy friend in Japan which in fact happened several years ago and . After showing the case, she asks readers that if it had been for a baby hatch, they would have been there. She doesn't assert but shows her thought that they might have been to baby hatch if it had been there at that time.
Although she the concept of the forst author, she doesn't suppose that baby hatch is the best. She thinks, however, it will saves the babies who may die outside.

I agree with the second author.

In my opinion, “baby hatch” is not the best answer. I do agree with the author in this way. However, it is much better than to abandon babies.
It may help decrease the number of people who would abandone babies. Usually abandoned babies die without noticed by anybody and if somebody finds them fortunately enough, they may have any disabilities. To abandon them means to infringe the right for living as human. This never should be allowed.
I think “baby hatch” should be very the last choice to make for parents about to abandon their babies. Therefore, people should learn more about the imortance of human's life and must think about it before having children.

I like JAZZ

This time, I'm gonna write about my favorite music.

This is the picture of CDs I bought in the loft in Umeda last Sunday.
I've wanted to buy them for four weeks and finally I got it.
Those three CDs cost just ¥2079 though they contain forty eight songs between the three.
This must have been a profitable purchase.

In so many songs, I have one song I wanna recommend.
It is “Blue Monk” by Thelonious Monk.
Then check the song on You Tube below.

All I know about Thelonious Monk is that he was a great jazz pianist and isn't alive now.
So if you wanna know more about him, click here.

My Favorite Websites

Today I wanna show you some websites.

Since I like Western music, I always visit Billboard.
As the billboard charts are renewed on Mondays, I check the charts, Hot 100 and Billboard 200, every Monday. Checking the billboard charts, I learn what song and who come into fashion now in the U.S. and decide which album to buy.

When I find some songs which is interesting to me, I go to You Tube and check the videos.
This Website must be hot!! Don't you agree?
One day, I read the news in the newspaper that You Tube was chosen as one of 100 influental inventions.
Everybody has ever been to the Website, hasn't it?

My DINNER!!

Tonight, I ate gyoza for dinner. This is the picture I took right before we cooked. They were made by my mother and my sister. They made as many as 50 but we ate 'em all. I was so stuffed.
I like gyoza very much and order it evry time I go to the Chinese restaurants like Osho and Bamiyan. But the best is homemade ones, I think.

The Spanish Class

Today, I had a conversation test in the Spanish class. I practiced it so many times with my partner before the class. When the class began, the teacher said she gave us the time to practice five minutes more. After that, finally the test started. “The first pare is,” she said, “Ippei Nishitani.” What an unlucky day it is, I thought. During the test, I made a fluff though I, almost completely, memorized it when practicing. It was a bad day today.
The Spanish is really difficult. Mo' difficult than expected. I think nothing is better than English, indeed.

Commercial for AEON CARD

I'm gonna talk about the TV commercial that you surely have ever seen.
Check the video below.

Target Audiences

This commercial is directed at people who own both cellular phones and AEON CARDs or people who don't own AEON CARDs but cellular phones.
Young people are also the target audiences because they often go to the convenience store and the situation in the commercial is the convenience store.

Authority

In this commercial, you at first notice Yu Aoi, a Japanese famous actress. She is one of the hottest actresses now. She mainly appear in the commercial.
AEON is also an important part. It is famous as the credit card company.

Emotion

Through the whole of the commercial, she talks watching the audiences directly. So they feel as if she were talking to them.
She says that id is popular now. This attracts the audiences who are usually young and want brand new things.

Logic/information

She introduces how useful the id card is to the audiences. They naturally learn how quickly they could buy materials with it.

Evaluation

In this commercial, Yu Aoi appears and introduces the‘AEON id.’So, in my opinion, the commercial wouldn't attract the audiences without her.
It is interesting that she compared the greatness of the‘AEON id’with her prediction that the rice ball has two umeboshi. She explains ‘AEON id’ with a funny similitude effectively. I don't think it is a good example but it would impress them the most.
The board written ‘every day AEON CARD’in the last scene also impress them because of the outstanding blue sky.
After watching the commercial, we want to visit the web site
of the AEON CARD. However, The URL is very small and fades too early.
Therefore, I would rate this commercial 8, on a scale of 1-10.
